Inaugural Student Food Security Design Jam engaged stakeholders college-wide

First of the Student Basic Needs Design Jams successfully held with Student Experience and Success, Industry Employment and Community Relations (IECR), Centennial College Student Association Inc (CCSAI) and COIE

The Centennial College Student Food Security Design Jam was a hallmark event that demonstrated the college’s commitment to tackling issues of food security on campus. Taking place on February 26 and 29, 2024, this event saw the participation of 53 individuals from various backgrounds, including college leadership, staff, students, alumni, community partners, and other stakeholders. It served as a dynamic platform for collaboration, innovation, and the development of actionable plans to enhance food security access among the college community.

The jam was notably characterized by its hybrid format, transitioning from online collaboration to an in-person session. This format facilitated a wide range of contributions, utilizing the social purpose model canvas as a key tool for participants to draft practical strategies for improving food security.

The event was initiated by David Ip Yam, Dean of Students, and Brad Beamish, Manager of Communications and Events at CCSAI, in collaboration with Lalit Guglani, Director, and the Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (COIE) team. The Design Jam was delivered by COIE, drawing inspiration from its Global Goals Jam Canada and the Rapid Inclusive Decision Making Jam. These influences underscored the event’s focus on promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable thinking, aligning with the Business Innovation and Transformation Program’s objectives under the strategies and new solutions stream.

A significant aspect of the jam was its emphasis on experiential learning, engaging participants in critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and planning. This approach reflects Centennial College’s dedication to providing hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for real-world challenges.

The collaboration across various college departments and student bodies was the hallmark of this event and included the Student Experience and Success division led by VP Neil Buddel, the Industry Employment and Community Relations division headed by VP Manjit Jheeta, and the Student Association’s President Ajane Adams alongside the “Basic Needs Working Group”. This collective effort was in partnership with the Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Centennial Innovates, led by Dean Jonathan Hack.

The jam concluded with innovative solutions evaluated by Neil Buddel and Manjit Jheeta, where teams presented their solutions addressing student food security. These presentations highlighted the event’s significant impact, showcasing the innovative and unique perspectives each participant contributed to addressing campus food security challenges. The Centennial College Student Food Security Design Jam stands as an inspiring example of collaborative effort towards a more sustainable and secure food future for its students.
